Short answer

For suspected hypothyroidism, a thyroid function test is a blood test that checks the body’s thyroid signal and available thyroid hormone.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

For suspected hypothyroidism, a thyroid function test is a blood test that checks the body’s thyroid signal and available thyroid hormone. Your clinician uses the result with your symptoms, examination, medical history, and medicines.

What the pattern may indicate

The main measurements are thyroid-stimulating hormone and free T4. A raised thyroid-stimulating hormone with low free T4 can support an underactive thyroid, while milder or mixed patterns may require repeat testing and clinical context. Symptoms such as tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, or changes in mood can have several causes, so the blood result is not interpreted in isolation. Antibody testing may help investigate an autoimmune cause.

Making the test useful

Ask the clinic whether you need any preparation; fasting is not usually required. Report all medicines and supplements, including biotin, and say if you are pregnant or recently started or stopped thyroid treatment. The sample comes from a vein and may cause brief discomfort or a small bruise. If treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and attend the planned follow-up so the dose can be assessed against your symptoms and repeat results.

When to get help sooner

Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are rapidly worsening, you develop marked drowsiness, confusion, unusual weakness, or feel faint. Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, loss of consciousness, or a dangerously low level of alertness. Pregnancy or plans for pregnancy should also be discussed early because thyroid care may need closer monitoring.

Questions for your appointment

Ask which results were abnormal, whether antibodies or repeat testing are needed, when improvement should be reviewed, and how to take any prescribed thyroid medicine. Check which symptoms should prompt an earlier call.

Questions people ask

Can symptoms alone diagnose hypothyroidism?

No. Symptoms overlap with other conditions, so thyroid blood results and clinical assessment are used together.

Should thyroid medicine be taken before the blood test?

Follow the clinic’s specific instructions and tell them when you last took it; do not change the dose independently.
