What to expect from targeted therapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma

Your team may test lymphoma cells or review previous biopsy findings to identify a feature that a medicine can act on. The treatment might be an oral medicine, an infusion, or part of a combination plan. The schedule depends on the drug, lymphoma subtype, other illnesses and whether treatment is being used to control active disease or maintain a response.

Before and during treatment, clinicians may check blood counts, kidney or liver function, symptoms and examination findings. Scans or other assessments can show how the lymph nodes and related disease are responding. Side effects vary: fatigue, nausea, diarrhoea, skin changes, infection risk or infusion reactions can occur, depending on the medicine.

Keep a written list of every medicine, supplement and vaccination, and ask before starting anything new. Take oral treatment exactly as prescribed; ask what to do after a missed dose or vomiting. For infusions, tell the nurse promptly about itching, flushing, chest tightness or dizziness during the visit.

Plan for blood tests and appointments, protect your energy with rest and gentle activity as tolerated, and use the symptom plan supplied by your team. Do not stop treatment because you feel better or because a side effect is troublesome; contact the oncology team so the dose or schedule can be reviewed safely.

Contact your cancer team promptly for fever or chills, a new cough, burning when passing urine, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, severe rash, or marked weakness. These symptoms can signal infection, dehydration, low blood counts or a medicine reaction.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fainting, sudden confusion, new one-sided weakness, severe chest pain or uncontrolled bleeding. Keep your treatment contact numbers accessible, including outside clinic hours.
