What to expect from targeted therapy for neuroendocrine tumours

Neuroendocrine tumours can behave differently depending on where they began, how their cells look under a microscope, how quickly they grow and whether they make hormones. Targeted medicines act on a selected pathway or protein in tumour cells. Your team may review tissue results, imaging and hormone-related symptoms before choosing treatment.

Treatment may be an oral medicine or an infusion, and it can be used alone or with another approach. Follow-up commonly combines symptom review, blood tests and scans. The goal may be to control growth, reduce hormone effects or relieve problems caused by the tumour.

Follow the dose instructions carefully and ask whether the medicine should be taken with food. Keep a record of diarrhoea, flushing, wheezing, abdominal pain, appetite changes, blood sugar changes or unusual tiredness. Tell the team about diabetes, heart disease and all other medicines before treatment starts.

Do not stop or restart treatment independently. Your clinicians may adjust the dose, treat a side effect or arrange extra tests when symptoms or laboratory results change.

Call your oncology team promptly for persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, dehydration, worsening abdominal pain, yellow skin, marked thirst or urination changes, fever, or a new rash with swelling. Severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion or chest pain needs emergency care.

Ask what tumour feature the medicine targets, how hormone symptoms will be tracked, which scans and tests are planned, what food instructions apply, and which symptoms need a same-day call.
