What to expect from targeted therapy for multiple myeloma

How the structures involved in Multiple Myeloma differ from normal

Short answer

Expect treatment to be matched to myeloma biology and your treatment history, with planned doses, blood-test monitoring, combination medicines and support for side effects.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Selection
Treatment depends on myeloma features, prior therapy and overall health.
Delivery
Options can include tablets, injections or infusions.
Follow-up
Blood and urine tests help track disease activity and treatment effects.

What targeted treatment does

Targeted medicines act on features of myeloma cells or on processes that help those cells survive. Your haematology team may use one medicine or combine it with other treatments. The choice depends on disease activity, previous medicines, kidney function, blood counts, symptoms and whether a transplant pathway is being considered.

Some medicines are tablets, while others are injections or infusions. Treatment is often arranged in cycles, with rest periods or planned clinic visits. Blood and urine tests help assess abnormal protein, blood counts, kidney function and treatment effects; imaging or bone assessment may also be used when needed.

Making treatment safer

Take each dose exactly as prescribed and keep a written medicine schedule. Tell the team about numbness, constipation, diarrhoea, infections, swelling or new pain. Ask before starting supplements or non-prescription medicines, because interactions can alter treatment effects.

Your team may discuss infection prevention, hydration, bone protection and medicines to reduce treatment-related problems. Never change a dose or skip an appointment on your own; call the clinic if a dose is missed or vomiting prevents you from keeping medicine down.

Warning signs

Seek prompt advice for fever, chills, new cough, unusual bruising or bleeding, marked weakness, reduced urine, severe constipation, worsening numbness, or new severe back or limb pain. Emergency assessment is needed for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, confusion or inability to move a limb.

Useful questions

Ask what the medicine targets, why it suits your current treatment stage, how cycles are organised, which results show response, and what to do about a missed dose or new symptom.

Questions people ask

Is targeted therapy used by itself for multiple myeloma?

It may be used alone in some situations, but combinations are common and depend on the treatment plan.

Why are blood tests needed so often?

They help monitor abnormal protein, blood counts, kidney function and possible effects of treatment.
