What to expect from targeted therapy for lung cancer

Targeted therapy is designed to interfere with a specific protein or gene change that helps lung cancer cells grow. Your team may test tumour tissue or a blood sample for an actionable biomarker before recommending a drug. Treatment can be used alone or alongside other cancer treatments, depending on the cancer type, stage, previous treatment and your general health.

Many targeted medicines are tablets or capsules taken on a schedule at home; some are given through a vein at a clinic. The aim may be to shrink cancer, slow its growth or control symptoms. The treatment plan can change if scans, symptoms or laboratory tests show a different response.

Bring a complete list of medicines, vitamins and supplements. Some targeted medicines interact with food or other medicines, so follow the prescribed timing and do not stop treatment without advice. Keep a record of doses and symptoms. Monitoring may include blood tests, blood pressure checks, heart or lung assessments and imaging scans.

Possible effects depend on the medicine and may include rash, diarrhoea, tiredness, mouth soreness, appetite changes or changes in liver tests. Report new effects early; clinicians can recommend supportive care, adjust the dose or pause treatment when appropriate.

Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, worsening breathlessness, chest pain, severe or persistent diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a rapidly spreading rash. Sudden severe breathing difficulty, confusion or fainting needs emergency care.

Ask which biomarker supports this treatment, how and when to take it, which foods or medicines to avoid, how response will be checked, and whom to call outside clinic hours.
