What to expect from spinal fusion for spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis means one vertebra has moved in relation to another. Fusion uses bone-healing material and stabilising hardware to hold the involved level while the bones join. If the shift narrows the nerve pathway, decompression may be performed as well. The plan depends on alignment, symptoms, imaging, and whether the segment moves abnormally.

Back soreness and stiffness are expected after the operation. Pain, tingling, or weakness in a leg may improve at a different pace because nerves can remain sensitive after pressure is relieved. The aim is safer movement and symptom control, not a promise that every discomfort will disappear.

Before surgery, arrange transport, help at home, and frequently used items within easy reach. Discuss medicines, nicotine, bone health, and any work or sport demands. Afterward, walk little and often, use prescribed support, and protect the incision. Avoid lifting, twisting, and unsupervised exercises.

A rehabilitation plan may start with bed mobility and walking, then add posture, hip strength, and trunk control. Return to driving, work, and sport should follow functional checks from your clinical team rather than a calendar alone.

Report fever, increasing wound redness or fluid, uncontrolled pain, calf swelling, or new leg numbness or weakness. Seek emergency help for new bladder or bowel-control problems, numbness around the groin, severe weakness, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Ask what caused the slip, whether decompression is included, how much correction is intended, what restrictions protect the fusion, and how progress will be checked before you resume work or exercise.
