What to Expect from Skin Tag Removal for Skin Tags

A clinician first checks that the growth looks like a skin tag and asks about medicines, bleeding tendencies, and skin conditions. Depending on its size, position, and attachment, removal may involve sterile snipping, shaving, freezing, or heat-based treatment. Local anaesthetic may be offered when needed.

The area can be tender, red, swollen, or lightly crusted afterward. A small wound may heal with a scab before new skin forms. Colour can temporarily look lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, particularly in people prone to pigment changes.

Keep the site clean and dry according to the instructions you receive. Wash your hands before touching it, avoid picking a crust, and use only the recommended dressing or ointment. Reduce rubbing from collars, jewellery, waistbands, or shaving until the surface has healed.

Do not try to cut, tie off, or burn a skin tag at home. If several growths appear, or a spot changes before removal, arrange an examination rather than assuming every growth is a skin tag. Protect healed skin from strong sun to reduce lingering colour change.

Contact the clinic for bleeding that continues despite firm instructed pressure, increasing redness or warmth, worsening pain, pus, fever, or a wound that is not improving. Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, facial swelling with breathing difficulty, or rapidly spreading symptoms. A growth that returns, changes, or does not heal should be examined.

Ask how the growth was identified, which removal method fits its location, how to dress the site, when normal exercise or shaving can resume, and whether the removed tissue needs further examination. Mention diabetes, immune problems, blood-thinning medicines, or a history of raised scars.
