What to Expect from Skin Graft for Burn Scars

A surgeon assesses the scar, nearby tissue, movement, and the area that could provide donor skin. During the procedure, scar tissue may be removed or released so the graft can cover the wound. The graft is secured with dressings, stitches, or another support method. A separate donor site also needs protection while it heals.

Early results can look swollen, red, or uneven. The graft and donor site commonly need scheduled checks. Scar colour, texture, and flexibility may continue to change as healing progresses, and the final appearance may not be clear immediately.

Follow the instructions for bathing, dressings, prescribed medicines, and activity. Keep pressure and friction away from the graft unless your team gives different advice. Elevation may help with swelling when the treated area allows it. Do not pull off dressings or apply creams, oils, or home remedies without checking first.

Attend wound reviews even when the area seems comfortable. Once the graft is closed and your clinician approves it, rehabilitation may include moisturising, stretching, massage, or compression to support movement and scar care. Sun protection helps limit colour change in healing skin.

Contact your surgical team promptly for increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, worsening swelling, pus, a bad smell, fever, bleeding that does not settle with instructed pressure, or a dressing that becomes soaked. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly worsening illness. A graft that becomes dark, pale, loose, or suddenly separates also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which scar features make grafting suitable, where donor skin may come from, how dressings will be managed, what movement is allowed, and which changes should trigger a call. Discuss expected rehabilitation, possible colour or texture differences, and other options if grafting is not appropriate.
