What to Expect from Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for Melanoma

Melanoma can drain from the original skin site to nearby lymph nodes. A sentinel lymph node biopsy samples the first node or nodes in that drainage pathway. A tracer helps the surgical team locate them, usually near the area where the melanoma was found. The procedure is used for staging and planning; it does not remove every lymph node in the region.

The operation is commonly coordinated with removal of the melanoma site or a wider excision when advised. The sampled nodes are examined by a laboratory, and your specialist explains what the findings mean for monitoring or further treatment.

Your team will explain fasting, medicines, allergies, transport, and wound care. After surgery, expect dressings and soreness around the biopsy site, with a small scar possible. Keep the wound dry or covered as instructed, avoid strenuous pulling until cleared, and take only recommended pain relief. Attend the result appointment even if the incision feels comfortable.

Call the surgical team if the wound opens, bleeding does not settle with firm pressure, or redness, warmth, drainage, fever, or worsening pain develops. Seek urgent help for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction. New swelling of the arm or leg after node surgery also deserves prompt advice.
