What to expect from salpingectomy for hydrosalpinx

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube that has become blocked and filled with fluid, often after inflammation, infection, surgery, or endometriosis. Salpingectomy removes the affected tube, usually through keyhole surgery. The surgeon may recommend removing one tube or both depending on the scan, symptoms, pelvic findings, and fertility plans. The ovaries are separate organs and are not routinely removed as part of this operation.

You may have abdominal tenderness, bloating, tiredness, shoulder-tip discomfort, or light bleeding after surgery. The removed tissue may be sent for laboratory examination, and the follow-up visit can review the result and the next step.

Before surgery, tell the team about pelvic infections, previous operations, medicines, allergies, and pregnancy plans. Organise transport and practical help for the first days. Take short walks, drink fluids as advised, eat foods that support regular bowel movements, and follow incision-care instructions. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise until cleared. Ask when intercourse, swimming, work, and fertility treatment can resume, since the answer depends on healing and your treatment plan.

Contact your care team if pain is worsening instead of easing, you develop fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine, or redness, swelling, or discharge from a wound. Seek urgent care for fainting, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, or a painful swollen leg. Persistent pelvic pain, feverish symptoms, or unusual discharge after recovery may indicate infection or another pelvic issue and should be assessed.

Ask why removal is recommended, whether one or both tubes are affected, and how hydrosalpinx may influence fertility treatment. Clarify whether the other tube and ovaries look healthy, what the operation may find, how long activity restrictions last, how pathology is reported, and when to seek help after discharge.
