What to expect from salpingectomy for ectopic pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy grows outside the uterus, commonly in a fallopian tube, where it cannot develop safely. Salpingectomy removes the affected tube and pregnancy, often through keyhole surgery. If there is heavy internal bleeding or another urgent concern, open surgery may be needed. The surgeon will assess the other tube and explain whether any additional treatment or monitoring is required.

Afterward, abdominal soreness, tiredness, bloating, and light vaginal bleeding may occur. Pregnancy hormone levels are often checked after treatment so the team can confirm that the ectopic pregnancy has resolved. Emotional recovery can take longer than wound healing, and support is appropriate.

Rest, walk gently, keep the wounds clean, and take medication exactly as prescribed. Do not drive until you can brake safely and are no longer affected by sedating pain medicine. Avoid strenuous activity and vaginal sex until the team advises. Keep every blood-test or review appointment. Ask when it is safe to try for pregnancy again and whether the remaining tube should be assessed.

Get emergency help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, fainting, dizziness, heavy bleeding, or sudden breathlessness; these can signal internal bleeding or another urgent problem. Call the surgical team for fever, worsening wound pain, foul discharge, repeated vomiting, or trouble urinating. Take a pregnancy test and contact the team if pregnancy symptoms continue or return.

Ask which tube was removed, whether the other tube looks healthy, how hormone monitoring will work, and when results are reassuring. Discuss emotional support, contraception, future pregnancy timing, early pregnancy scans, activity limits, pain relief, and who to contact at any hour if warning symptoms return.
