What to expect from pre-marital screening for genetic risk in related couples

When biological relatives have children together, some inherited conditions may be more likely because both partners can carry the same altered gene. Being related does not by itself confirm a condition, and a carrier may have no symptoms. Screening looks for selected blood or genetic findings; it cannot identify every possible inherited disorder.

A clinician may ask about known diagnoses, childhood illness, unexplained early deaths, repeated pregnancy losses, disabilities, or relatives with similar health problems. Results may show that neither partner carries the screened condition, that one partner is a carrier, or that both need more detailed assessment. A carrier result describes genetic status, not a diagnosis of illness.

Bring any family medical records you can access and write down which relatives were affected, how they are related to you, and whether testing has already been done. Both partners should attend counselling when possible so results are interpreted together.
