What to expect from post-treatment surveillance for meningioma

How the structures involved in Meningioma differ from normal

Short answer

After meningioma treatment, follow-up usually combines scheduled reviews, neurological checks and brain imaging to watch for regrowth and manage lasting effects.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What follow-up can involve

Your care team will tailor the plan to the tumour’s location, its grade, how it was treated and whether any tumour remains. Visits may include questions about headaches, seizures, vision, hearing, balance, strength, sensation, memory and mood. A neurological examination can compare these findings with earlier visits.

Magnetic resonance imaging, often with contrast when appropriate, lets the team compare the treated area over time. The interval between scans is individual; a change on an image may need repeat imaging or specialist review rather than an immediate conclusion.

How to prepare

Keep each appointment and bring a current list of medicines, including anti-seizure treatment and steroids if prescribed. Record new or changing symptoms, when they occur and what affects them. Tell the team about treatment effects such as fatigue, concentration difficulty or emotional changes so rehabilitation or supportive care can be considered.

Ask who will arrange scans, how results will reach you and whom to contact between visits. You can read more about [Follow-Up After Cancer Treatment](/treatments/survivorship-and-rehabilitation/post-treatment-surveillance/).

When to seek care

Contact your oncology or neurosurgery team promptly for a new seizure, worsening or persistent headache, repeated vomiting, new weakness or numbness, speech difficulty, vision change, increasing confusion or a noticeable change in balance. Seek emergency care for a seizure that does not stop, sudden severe neurological change or difficulty waking.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: What is the purpose and timing of my next scan? Which symptoms should I report the same day? Could my medicines affect alertness or seizure control? What rehabilitation support is available? Who explains the scan result, and what happens if an image is unclear?

Questions people ask

Will every follow-up visit include a scan?

Not necessarily. The team chooses imaging intervals according to your tumour features, treatment and previous results.

Can symptoms after treatment be managed?

Many treatment effects can be assessed and supported with medicines, rehabilitation or other specialist care.
