What to expect from pneumococcal vaccination for pneumonia

Pneumococcal bacteria can cause pneumonia and other serious infections. Vaccination trains the immune system to recognise selected pneumococcal types. It cannot prevent every cause of pneumonia, so cough, fever, chest pain, or breathing difficulty still deserve attention. Contact a clinician for persistent fever, worsening cough, or breathlessness because vaccination does not rule out pneumonia or another infection.
