What to expect from physiotherapy for cervical spondylosis

Short answer
Expect physiotherapy for cervical spondylosis to combine assessment, mobility work, posture advice and progressive neck and upper-body strengthening.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common goals
- Less stiffness and better control during daily activities
- Treatment pace
- Progressive, guided by symptoms, movement and function
What therapy assesses
The therapist may review stiffness, pain triggers, headaches, arm symptoms and how your neck affects sleep, work or driving. They can observe neck and upper-back movement and assess shoulder strength, coordination and nerve signs. Sessions may use gentle range-of-motion exercises, upper-back mobility, muscle retraining and hands-on treatment when appropriate. The aim is to improve useful movement and confidence without provoking symptoms.
What you can do between visits
Use the home programme as instructed, including small movement breaks during desk work or phone use. Keep frequently used objects at a comfortable height and avoid holding the neck in one position for long periods. Strengthening is usually introduced gradually, with the load changed according to symptoms and function. Tell the therapist about dizziness, new arm symptoms or pain that remains increased after an exercise session.
When to seek medical care
Arrange medical review for new or increasing arm weakness, loss of hand coordination, worsening numbness or difficulty walking. Seek urgent care for sudden neurological changes, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the saddle area. A sudden severe headache, fever with a stiff neck, or neck pain after significant injury also needs prompt assessment.
Questions to ask
Ask which posture changes are relevant to your work, how to progress strengthening, whether arm symptoms need further assessment, and what improvement should be tracked.

Questions people ask
Is cervical spondylosis treated with exercise alone?
Exercise is often one part of care; education, activity changes and selected hands-on techniques may also be included after assessment.
Should I stop moving my neck when it hurts?
Avoiding every movement can increase stiffness. Use the comfortable range advised by your therapist and report pain that spreads or neurological symptoms.
