Short answer

Expect a confidential assessment, a shared care plan, emotional and practical support, and regular reviews as treatment for postnatal depression develops.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How support is structured

A clinician may ask about mood, sleep, appetite, energy, guilt, concentration, bonding, frightening thoughts and how daily tasks are going. They may also check physical recovery, medicines, feeding plans, previous mental health concerns and available support at home. Postnatal depression can affect parents in different ways, and asking for help is not a judgement about parenting. Care may include talking therapy, practical planning, peer or family support, medicine, or a combination. Your plan should reflect your preferences and safety needs.

Making the most of care

Before an appointment, note changes in mood, sleep and functioning, including better and harder periods. Tell the team about breastfeeding or chestfeeding, other medicines, and worries about side effects. Agree on who to contact between visits and when the plan will be reviewed. Small practical measures such as protected rest, regular food, help with feeds or household tasks, and accepting support from a trusted person can make treatment easier to follow. Improvement may need time and adjustments, so report symptoms that remain difficult rather than stopping treatment alone.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help if you might harm yourself or the baby, cannot care safely, feel detached from reality, hear or see things others do not, or feel unusually energised with little need for sleep. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department if danger is immediate, and ask a trusted adult to stay with you and the baby.

Questions to ask

Ask which treatment options fit your symptoms, how feeding affects medicine choices, what improvement should look like, and who to call if your mood worsens.

Questions people ask

Will asking for support affect my parenting rights?

Seeking care is a responsible step; clinicians focus on safety and support, and can explain confidentiality and its limits.

Can postnatal depression be treated while breastfeeding?

Often, yes. Discuss feeding plans with the prescriber so options and monitoring can be considered together.
