What to expect from pelvic MRI for a bicornuate uterus

A bicornuate uterus has a deep indentation at the top and two upper cavities that join lower down. MRI gives clear views of the uterine muscle, the inner cavity, cervix and nearby pelvic structures. It may help distinguish this shape from other differences present from birth, which can matter when planning pregnancy care or interpreting symptoms. The scan itself does not repair the uterus and cannot by itself predict how a pregnancy will progress.

Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, have metal or an implanted device, kidney problems, or feel claustrophobic. Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. You may change into a gown and remove metal items. During the scan, lie on a table that moves into a short tunnel; loud knocking sounds are normal, and staff can hear and speak with you. Keep still and tell them if you need a pause.

Ask whether contrast is needed. If it is planned, mention previous reactions and allergies. Afterward, arrange a follow-up so the images are interpreted alongside your history, examination and any pregnancy plans.

An MRI appointment is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek prompt medical care for severe or worsening pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or new pregnancy-related pain or bleeding. After contrast, get urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling or widespread hives. Contact your clinician if anxiety about the scan is preventing you from attending.

Ask what uterine features the images are intended to clarify, whether contrast is expected, when the report will be ready, and whether the result changes pregnancy or fertility follow-up.
