Short answer

Oral rehydration therapy helps replace water and salts lost through diarrhoea and vomiting from rotavirus infection.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main goal
Support hydration during fluid loss
How to offer it
Frequent small sips or spoonfuls
Extra care
Watch urine, alertness, tears, and ability to drink

Why it is used

Rotavirus infection often causes watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and reduced appetite. Children can become dehydrated quickly because they may lose fluid and struggle to drink. Oral rehydration solution supplies water, salts, and glucose in a form that helps absorption. It does not eliminate rotavirus or act as an antibiotic; its purpose is to support hydration during recovery.

Giving oral rehydration

Offer the prepared solution in frequent small sips or spoonfuls, especially after loose stools or vomiting. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with smaller amounts. Mix sachets exactly as directed and discard solution according to the product instructions. Continue breastfeeding if applicable, and offer suitable foods when the child wants them. Do not dilute the solution with extra water or replace it with very sugary drinks.

Warning signs

Seek urgent care if a child is unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, confused, breathing abnormally, unable to drink, repeatedly vomiting, or passing very little urine. A dry mouth, no tears, sunken eyes, or worsening weakness also needs prompt assessment. Infants and children with ongoing losses should be assessed early because their condition can change quickly.

Ask the clinician

Ask how much solution to offer, how to judge urine and alertness, and when persistent diarrhoea or vomiting needs a review.

Questions people ask

Does the solution treat rotavirus itself?

No. It replaces lost fluid and salts while the infection resolves; it does not kill the virus.

What should I do if my child vomits it?

Pause briefly, then restart with smaller, frequent amounts; seek care if drinking remains impossible.
