What to expect from oral rehydration therapy for cholera

Cholera can remove fluid from the body quickly. Oral rehydration solution contains water, glucose and salts in a carefully balanced mixture. The bowel absorbs these ingredients together, helping restore fluid even while diarrhoea continues. It does not kill the bacteria or stop every stool, so it is supportive treatment rather than a complete treatment for cholera.

Use a commercially prepared solution or a product supplied by a clinician, and mix it exactly as directed with safe drinking water. Take frequent small sips; if vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart more slowly. Continue replacing fluid after each watery stool, following the amount advised for your age and condition. Keep eating when able, and arrange urgent medical assessment because cholera may need additional treatment and monitoring.

Seek urgent care for inability to drink, repeated vomiting, very little or no urine, marked thirst, dizziness, fainting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, cold hands or feet, or worsening weakness. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term illness can become dehydrated quickly. A clinic may need to give fluids through a vein if drinking cannot keep pace with losses.
