What to expect from an MRI scan for raised PSA

A raised PSA can have several explanations, including non-cancerous prostate conditions. The MRI provides images of the prostate, its shape and surrounding tissues. It does not by itself confirm or exclude cancer. A radiologist reviews the images and your urology team combines the report with your PSA history, examination and other findings.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, pacemakers, implants, kidney problems, allergies and any chance of pregnancy. Follow the instructions about eating, drinking and medicines. Remove metal items before entering the scanner. During the scan, the machine makes loud sounds; you can communicate with staff and receive hearing protection. Staying still helps the pictures remain clear.

Contact the imaging or urology team promptly if you develop a new problem after contrast, such as a rash, swelling or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms. Ask when and how the MRI result will be discussed, especially if you have difficulty passing urine, fever or significant pain.

Ask whether contrast is planned, how to prepare your bowel and bladder, when the report will be ready, and what the next step could be if the MRI shows an area needing closer assessment.
