What to expect from an MRI scan for Li-Fraumeni syndrome

Li-Fraumeni syndrome is an inherited condition associated with an increased chance of certain cancers. MRI may be used in a planned surveillance programme because it produces images without ionising radiation. The body area scanned depends on your surveillance plan and personal circumstances.

A technologist checks MRI safety, positions you on the table, and obtains images in sequences that make tapping or thumping sounds. Contrast may be recommended for some examinations. An MRI does not by itself diagnose every cancer; specialists interpret it with your examination, history, and other planned assessments.

Tell the imaging service about metal implants, a pacemaker, metal fragments, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, or anxiety in enclosed spaces. Bring details of previous scans or attend the centre where your records are available. Follow instructions about food, drink, medicines, and contrast.

Wear suitable clothing and remove jewellery or other metal objects. Use the communication system and alarm button during the scan. Keep surveillance appointments and ask how results from different body areas will be coordinated by your genetics or oncology team.

Contact the imaging or clinical team promptly for a delayed rash, swelling, wheezing, or other concerning reaction after contrast. Seek urgent help for a new seizure, sudden weakness, severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, or collapse, regardless of a planned scan.
