What to expect from mole removal

Moles, also called melanocytic naevi or beauty spots, can be removed for medical assessment, repeated irritation, or personal preference. The clinician examines the mole and discusses the method that fits its size, position, depth, and reason for removal. The area is generally numbed before the mole is removed. If tissue is sent for examination, the result is discussed separately; removal alone does not establish that a mole is cancerous.

Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, skin conditions, and previous procedures. Afterward, keep the dressing in place for the advised period and wash the area gently when instructed. Do not pull at crusting or stitches. Reduce rubbing from clothing, and protect the healed area from strong sunlight to help limit darkening of the scar. Arrange follow-up if the clinic requests it, especially when a sample has been submitted for examination.

Ask for medical advice if bleeding continues despite steady pressure, the wound becomes more painful, or redness and swelling spread around it. Pus-like drainage, fever, wound separation, or a dressing that becomes soaked also warrants prompt contact with the clinic. A changing mole elsewhere, or a new pigmented spot that bleeds or does not heal, deserves a skin assessment rather than home treatment.

Ask why removal is recommended, which technique will be used, whether stitches are likely, how to clean the wound, and how the scar should be protected. Confirm when you may swim or exercise and how you will receive any examination result.
