What treatment involves

A clinician checks the burn's depth, size, location and cause, then looks for broken skin, blistering, swelling or reduced movement. Loose clothing or jewellery near the area may need careful removal before swelling increases. The area can be cleaned and covered with a non-stick dressing to protect healing skin.

Treatment may include advice about pain relief, dressing changes and keeping the area clean. Do not break blisters or apply butter, oil, toothpaste or ice; these can damage tissue or make assessment harder.

Care after treatment

Follow the dressing instructions and wash your hands before touching the area. Keep the dressing dry if instructed, avoid friction and watch for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, discharge or worsening pain. Do not pull away stuck fabric; cool the area and seek advice if removal is difficult.

Avoid ice because extreme cold can injure already damaged skin. Cool running water is generally preferred for initial cooling.
