What to expect from a mental health assessment for ADHD

The clinician may ask when difficulties began, where they occur, and how they affect study, work, relationships, organisation, sleep, and emotional wellbeing. Childhood history is relevant because ADHD-related patterns usually begin during development, so old school reports or a parent’s observations may help.

The assessment also considers anxiety, depression, sleep problems, learning differences, substance use, physical health, and other conditions that can look similar or occur alongside ADHD. There is no single blood test or scan that confirms ADHD.

Write down examples of missed tasks, forgetfulness, restlessness, impulsive decisions, and situations in which symptoms improve or worsen. Bring a medicines list and, if possible, relevant childhood information. Complete questionnaires thoughtfully; they support the interview but do not decide the outcome alone.

Ask how the clinician will share the conclusion and what support is available whether or not ADHD is diagnosed. Helpful next steps can include skills-based support, treatment discussion, or assessment of another concern.

Tell the clinician promptly about thoughts of self-harm, feeling unsafe, severe agitation, hallucinations, or inability to sleep for several nights. Seek emergency help if you may act on a plan to harm yourself or someone else, or cannot stay safe.
