What to expect from meniscus repair for a meniscus tear

The surgeon places stitches in the torn meniscus so the tissue can heal while preserving its cushioning function. The procedure may be performed with a small camera through keyhole incisions. Your knee may feel swollen or stiff afterwards, and pain near the incisions is common. A brace or crutches may be needed while the repair is protected; the exact limits depend on the tear and the surgeon’s technique.

Follow the instructions for weight-bearing, brace use and exercises. Keep dressings clean and use ice or elevation only as advised. Physiotherapy usually begins with controlled range-of-motion work, then progresses to quadriceps and hip strengthening, balance and activity-specific drills. Avoid twisting, deep squats and impact until your clinician clears them. Keep follow-up appointments so movement and healing can be checked.

Contact your surgical team promptly for worsening redness, drainage, fever, severe swelling, calf pain or new numbness. Seek urgent help for chest pain, trouble breathing, a cold or pale foot, or sudden inability to move the leg. A locked knee or a marked increase in pain after a new twist also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask which movements and weight-bearing level are allowed, how long the brace is needed, when physiotherapy starts, and what milestones guide driving, work, sport and kneeling.
