What to expect from laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for an ovarian endometrioma

An ovarian endometrioma is a cyst associated with endometriosis. During laparoscopy, the surgeon uses a camera and fine instruments through small abdominal openings. The cyst lining may be removed while the surgeon tries to protect healthy ovarian tissue. The effect on ovarian reserve and fertility depends on the cyst, the ovary and previous treatment, so this discussion belongs in planning before surgery. Tissue may be sent for examination, and surgery does not by itself prevent endometriosis from returning.

Tell your team whether you are trying to conceive, using fertility treatment or taking hormonal medicines. Follow fasting instructions and arrange transport and home support.
