What to expect from laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy for ovarian cysts

A surgeon passes a camera and instruments through small openings in the abdomen, usually after the abdomen is gently expanded with gas. The cyst is separated from the ovary and removed; the approach depends on its size, appearance and position. The surgeon may send tissue for laboratory examination. Sometimes the operation needs to change to a larger incision or a different procedure if visibility, bleeding or safety requires it. Your surgeon should explain this possibility during consent.

Follow fasting and medicine instructions, and tell the team about pregnancy possibility, allergies and blood-thinning medicines. Arrange a lift home and help with daily tasks. Soreness around the wounds, bloating or shoulder-tip discomfort can occur after laparoscopy. Keep dressings and incisions clean as instructed, walk gently when advised and avoid strenuous activity until your team clears it. Attend the follow-up visit to discuss healing and the tissue result.

Seek urgent medical advice for heavy bleeding, worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, faintness, a swollen or painful leg, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or an incision that becomes increasingly red, hot or draining. These symptoms can signal a complication and should not be managed by simply waiting for follow-up.

Ask whether the cyst can be removed while preserving the ovary, what findings could change the operation, how fertility may be affected, when you can drive, and when the tissue result will be discussed.
