What to expect from joint aspiration for olecranon bursitis

The clinician cleans the skin, uses local numbing medicine when appropriate, and guides a needle into the fluid-filled sac behind the elbow. A sample may go to a laboratory to check for infection, blood cells, or crystal deposits. Removing some fluid can reduce pressure and show whether the swelling returns. Aspiration does not by itself explain every cause of bursitis, and the plan may include protecting the elbow from repeated leaning or impact.

Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, diabetes, skin problems, or a previous reaction to local anaesthetic. Wear a loose sleeve so the dressing is easy to keep clean. Afterward, follow the instructions about activity and the dressing; avoid placing direct pressure on the elbow while it settles. Mild tenderness can occur, but increasing pain should be reported. Take only medicines approved for you, especially if a sample is being used to investigate infection.

Contact the treating team promptly if the puncture site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if drainage continues. Seek urgent medical assessment for fever, chills, feeling faint, rapidly worsening elbow swelling, or difficulty moving the arm. These changes can signal infection or another problem that needs timely treatment.

Ask what the fluid will be tested for, when results are expected, how long to keep the dressing on, and which elbow movements or positions to avoid. You can also ask what will happen if the bursa fills again and whether another treatment is needed.
