What to expect from iontophoresis for sweaty feet

The soles are placed in shallow trays connected to an iontophoresis device. A mild current passes through the water and may feel like tingling, warmth, or prickling. Treatment often begins with a course of regular sessions, followed by maintenance when dampness gradually returns. The skin may feel dry or mildly sensitive afterwards. Iontophoresis reduces sweating in the treated area for a period; it does not address every possible cause of sweating elsewhere on the body.

Wash and dry your feet, remove anklets or other metal items, and tell the clinician about fissures, athlete's foot, eczema, reduced sensation, pregnancy, or implanted electrical devices. Do not place broken or infected skin into the trays without clinical advice. Dry the feet carefully after treatment, especially between the toes, and use a recommended moisturiser on dry areas. Breathable footwear and fresh socks can reduce dampness while you monitor whether the treatment is helping.

Stop and contact the clinic if treatment causes a burn, blister, persistent numbness, marked swelling, or pain that continues after the session. Seek urgent help for fainting, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Arrange a medical assessment if sweating suddenly becomes widespread, occurs during sleep, or comes with fever, unexplained weight change, tremor, or a racing heartbeat.
