What to expect from steroid injection for hidradenitis suppurativa

Short answer

Steroid injection into the skin for hidradenitis suppurativa may reduce inflammation and pain in a selected tender lump, but it does not treat every lesion or prevent all flares.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical target
A selected painful, inflamed lump
Main aim
Reduce local swelling and tenderness
Not a substitute for
Assessment of abscesses, tunnels, or recurring disease

What the injection means

A clinician places corticosteroid directly into a selected inflamed nodule or lump, often when it is painful and active. The goal is to calm inflammation in that spot. Hidradenitis suppurativa often affects areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits or groin, so the examination also helps identify tunnels, drainage, or lesions that need another approach.

The injection may sting briefly and the area can remain sore afterward. Improvement is judged by reduced tenderness, swelling, and pressure rather than by an instant change. It does not drain an abscess, close a tunnel, or replace a longer-term plan for recurring disease.

What to do before and after

Tell your clinician about fever, spreading redness, medicines that affect immunity, diabetes, allergies, and previous reactions to steroid injections. Do not squeeze the lump. Afterward, keep the site clean and dry as instructed, reduce friction from tight clothing, and follow any dressing or washing directions.

Continue your agreed hidradenitis suppurativa routine unless the clinician changes it. Local skin thinning or a lighter patch can occur at the injection site. Do not put deodorant, fragranced products, or unapproved creams on broken skin. If the area opens or drains, ask how to protect nearby skin and clothing.

When to seek care

Contact the clinic if pain, swelling, warmth, or drainage worsens, or if you develop fever or feel faint. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaking, or feeling acutely unwell. A lump that remains tense, repeatedly drains, or limits movement may need assessment for drainage or another treatment rather than another injection.

Questions for your doctor

Is this lump suitable for injection, or does it need drainage? When should pain and swelling begin to settle? How should I care for drainage? What will help reduce future flares in this area, and what signs mean I should contact the clinic?

Questions people ask

Will this injection prevent the next hidradenitis suppurativa flare?

It is directed at a selected active lesion and cannot by itself prevent every future flare.

Should a draining lump always be injected?

No. Drainage, infection signs, and tunnels can change the safest treatment, so the lesion should be examined first.
