What to expect from induction of labour for premature rupture of membranes

Premature rupture of membranes means the amniotic sac has opened before labour begins. The maternity team will confirm fluid loss, check your temperature and other observations, listen to the baby's heartbeat, and consider how far along the pregnancy is. Induction may be advised when continuing the pregnancy could increase infection concerns or when there is another reason to plan birth.

The cervix may need softening before contractions are started. This can involve a medicine placed in the vagina or taken by mouth, a balloon catheter, or another method chosen for your circumstances. If the cervix is ready, an intravenous medicine may be used to strengthen contractions. The process can take time, and the plan may change if your or your baby's condition changes.

Bring your maternity notes, medicines list, and items for a hospital stay. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medication. Tell the team when the fluid first appeared, its colour or smell, whether you have contractions, and how your baby's movements compare with usual. During induction, change position when advised, use breathing or comfort measures, and ask about pain relief options before contractions become difficult.

Contact your maternity unit promptly if you think your waters have broken, even without contractions. Seek urgent help for fever or feeling shivery, worsening abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, foul-smelling or green fluid, reduced baby movements, regular painful contractions, or feeling suddenly unwell. Do not put anything in the vagina or have sex after suspected membrane rupture unless your maternity team says it is safe.

Ask why induction is recommended now, which cervical preparation method is planned, how your baby's heart rate will be monitored, what happens if induction does not progress, and which pain relief choices are available. Clarify when antibiotics or other medicines may be used and who to call if symptoms change at home.
