What to expect from a hormonal coil for uterine fibroids

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the muscle of the womb. A hormonal coil releases progestogen mainly inside the womb and can reduce the amount of lining that sheds. This may improve heavy menstrual bleeding, but pressure, pelvic pain, bladder symptoms or fertility concerns caused by a fibroid may remain.

A clinician may assess the womb before insertion, especially if a fibroid changes the cavity. Cramping and spotting are possible after placement, and bleeding can be unpredictable during the adjustment period.

Share details of flooding, clots, pain, anaemia symptoms, prior pelvic procedures and plans for pregnancy. Ask whether the fibroid's position allows safe placement and whether another treatment is more suitable. Arrange review if bleeding does not improve or pelvic pressure continues. Do not try to reposition or remove the coil yourself.

Get urgent care for severe pain, very heavy bleeding, faintness, fever or foul-smelling discharge. Contact the clinician if the threads disappear, feel different, or you can feel the device in the vagina. New severe pain with a late period needs prompt assessment for pregnancy and possible complications.

Ask whether the fibroid distorts the womb cavity, how bleeding will be monitored, whether iron testing is needed, and which options remain if the coil does not control symptoms.
