Arrange help with transport and demanding household tasks for the early recovery period. Use crutches, medication and wound care exactly as instructed. Attend rehabilitation and practise only the exercises prescribed for your stage. Avoid deep flexion, twisting, impact or sports until your surgeon or therapist clears them. Tell the team about your work and preferred activities so the programme can target the movements you need.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening pain, calf swelling or new weakness. Seek emergency help for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a leg that becomes suddenly cold or unusually pale. A sudden inability to bear weight also warrants prompt advice.
