What to expect from a growth scan for fetal growth restriction

During the ultrasound, the sonographer measures the baby's head, abdomen and thigh bone, then uses these measurements to estimate growth. The scan also looks at the placenta, amniotic fluid and the baby's position. Doppler ultrasound may assess blood flow through the umbilical cord and other vessels.

A small measurement does not by itself explain why growth is restricted or determine the outcome. The clinician interprets the pattern alongside your dates, previous scans, blood pressure, movements and other pregnancy findings. One scan is a snapshot, so repeat scans may show the direction of growth.

Follow the appointment instructions; a growth scan usually does not require a special preparation. Bring your pregnancy notes and ask when the report will be reviewed. Keep monitoring appointments and follow advice about blood pressure, medicines and fetal movements. The care team may arrange additional ultrasound, Doppler or heart-rate monitoring depending on the findings.

Contact your maternity unit urgently if your baby's movements are reduced or changed, or if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache, vision changes or sudden swelling. Do not wait for the next scan when these warning signs occur; the maternity team can advise where you should be assessed.

Ask which measurements concern the team, whether blood flow and fluid are reassuring, when the next assessment is due, and what symptoms should prompt a call. Discuss how the findings could affect monitoring, steroid treatment if relevant, or the recommended timing and place of birth.
