What to expect from a GP consultation for sinusitis

Explain when congestion, facial pressure, reduced smell, coloured nasal discharge, cough or fever began, and whether symptoms improved before returning. The GP may ask about allergies, dental pain, asthma, previous episodes and medicines already tried. They can examine your nose, throat, face and sometimes teeth, while checking for tenderness or swelling. Most assessments are clinical; imaging is generally reserved for unusual, severe or persistent concerns. Antibiotics are not automatically needed, because many episodes follow viral inflammation.

Bring a list of nasal sprays, pain medicines and allergy treatments, including how often you used them. Mention pregnancy, immune problems or recent dental work. Your plan may include fluids, rest, saline rinsing or an advised nasal treatment. Use sprays only as directed, because some decongestant sprays can cause rebound congestion when used too long.

Seek urgent help for swelling around an eye, vision change, severe headache, confusion, neck stiffness, facial swelling or rapidly worsening illness. Contact the GP again if symptoms persist, repeatedly return or interfere with breathing, sleep or eating despite the advised plan.
