What to expect from a GP consultation for meningitis

The GP will ask when symptoms began and whether there is fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, sensitivity to light, or a rash. They may check temperature, breathing, pulse, alertness, neck movement, skin changes, and neurological responses. Meningitis can worsen quickly, so a reassuring conversation at one moment does not replace medical assessment if symptoms are changing.

The consultation may be brief because suspected meningitis is assessed urgently. A GP cannot confirm every cause in the surgery; hospital clinicians may arrange blood tests, imaging, or a lumbar puncture.

Tell the practice immediately that meningitis is a concern when booking, and follow instructions about waiting safely or seeking emergency help. Note the symptom start time, measured temperature, medicines taken, allergies, recent infections, travel, pregnancy, and relevant medical conditions. Do not drive yourself if you are confused, very drowsy, faint, or seriously unwell. Take a medicines list and identification if this will not delay care.

Call emergency services for a severe or rapidly worsening headache, stiff neck with fever, confusion, difficulty waking, a seizure, breathing trouble, collapse, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Do not wait for a rash to appear: meningitis can present without one. Babies may have poor feeding, an unusual cry, marked sleepiness, or a bulging soft spot and need urgent assessment.

Ask what findings make meningitis more or less likely, whether hospital assessment is needed now, what tests may be considered, and which changes should prompt emergency action while travelling or waiting.
