What to expect from a GP consultation for inguinal hernia

The GP may ask when the lump or discomfort began, whether it changes with standing, coughing, lifting or lying down, and whether it can be gently pushed back. They may ask about bowel symptoms, nausea, vomiting and previous abdominal surgery.

With your consent and privacy, the GP may examine the groin and abdomen while you stand, cough or strain. They assess the lump, tenderness and whether it can be reduced. If the diagnosis is uncertain, imaging or a surgical opinion may be arranged; a small or symptom-free hernia may be monitored.

Wear clothing that allows the groin to be examined comfortably and bring a list of medicines and previous operations. Note activities that increase discomfort and whether the swelling disappears when you lie down. Avoid heavy lifting if it reliably causes pain while awaiting advice.

Follow the referral or review plan. A surgeon can discuss whether repair is appropriate, taking account of symptoms, examination findings and your general health. Do not attempt forceful pressure on a painful or stuck lump.

Seek emergency help for a groin lump that becomes very painful, firm, discoloured or cannot be pushed back, especially with vomiting, abdominal swelling, or inability to pass stool or gas. These changes can indicate trapped tissue and need prompt assessment.

Ask whether the lump needs imaging or surgical review, which activities to avoid, how to manage discomfort, what changes are urgent, and when you should return for reassessment.
