What to expect from a GP consultation for genital herpes

The GP may ask when blisters, sores, tingling, burning or pain began, whether this is the first episode, and whether you have had a new sexual partner or previous similar symptoms. They may examine the affected skin and ask about pain when passing urine, vaginal or penile discharge, pregnancy and other sexual-health concerns. A swab from a fresh sore may help identify herpes. Testing and examination are handled confidentially, and you can ask for an explanation before any examination.

If possible, arrange assessment while sores or blisters are present, as this can make a swab more useful. Note the first day of symptoms and any previous episodes, and bring medicine details. Your GP may discuss antiviral treatment, pain relief, keeping the area clean, avoiding sexual contact while sores are present, and ways to reduce transmission. Tell recent or current partners according to the advice you receive, and ask about wider sexual-health testing when relevant.

Seek prompt medical help for inability to pass urine, severe pain, rapidly worsening sores, fever with marked illness, eye symptoms, or symptoms during pregnancy. People with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment. Emergency help is appropriate if severe illness develops or you cannot maintain hydration.

Ask whether a swab is needed, when treatment should start, how to care for sores, when sexual contact is safer, whether partners need advice, and whether other sexually transmitted infection tests are appropriate. Ask how to recognise a future episode.
