What to expect from a GP consultation for fibromyalgia

Short answer
A GP consultation for fibromyalgia usually reviews widespread pain, fatigue, sleep, mood, daily function, and other possible causes before agreeing a practical care plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the appointment may cover
Your GP may ask when symptoms began, where pain travels, how it changes through the day, and how sleep, concentration, work, and activity are affected. They may ask about headaches, bowel symptoms, mood, medicines, previous illness, and family history. A physical examination can look for joint swelling, muscle tenderness, strength changes, and signs that point toward another condition.
There is no single blood test that confirms fibromyalgia. Your GP may use tests to investigate other explanations for your symptoms, based on your history and examination. The consultation may end with education, symptom tracking, activity and sleep advice, medication discussion, or referral.
Prepare for the visit
Write down your main symptoms, sleep pattern, activity limits, current medicines, and any changes since they started. Bring relevant reports and a list of questions. Describe what a difficult day looks like as well as what you can manage; this helps the GP understand function rather than relying only on a pain score.
When symptoms need faster attention
Seek urgent medical help for new chest pain, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, confusion, fainting, or a rapidly developing allergic reaction. Arrange a prompt GP review for unexplained weight loss, persistent fever, a swollen or hot joint, new neurological changes, or pain that is rapidly changing.
Questions to take with you
Ask what diagnoses are being considered, which tests are appropriate, how to pace activity, what improvement to monitor, and when follow-up should happen. If medicine is discussed, ask about expected effects, side effects, and what to do if it does not suit you.

Questions people ask
Can a GP diagnose fibromyalgia in one visit?
Some people can receive a working diagnosis after the history and examination, while others need follow-up or tests to clarify symptoms and exclude other conditions.
Should I bring a symptom diary?
Yes. A short record of pain, sleep, fatigue, activity, and medicines can make patterns easier to discuss during the consultation.
