An ovarian endometrioma is an endometriosis-related cyst in an ovary. A GnRH analogue reduces the hormone signals that normally stimulate the ovaries. This can suppress endometriosis-related inflammation and bleeding, but it does not remove the cyst itself. Your clinician may discuss it before or after surgery, or when symptom control is the main aim.

Treatment may be an injection or, for some medicines, another prescribed form. Hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, headache, mood changes and reduced libido can occur because oestrogen levels fall. Seek urgent help for sudden severe abdominal pain with faintness, persistent vomiting, fever, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment and should not be attributed to the endometrioma or medication without review.
