FAP is associated with inherited changes in the APC gene and can cause many colorectal polyps. The counsellor will ask about polyps, colorectal cancer, thyroid problems, and other relevant findings in relatives. They explain why the family pattern may suggest testing, what a result could mean for children and siblings, and how an identified change can guide colon and other organ surveillance.

Collect names, diagnoses, ages, and available reports from relatives before the appointment. Bring your own endoscopy history and details of previous genetic tests. Ask whether testing an affected family member is possible, how results will be shared, and which gastroenterology team will arrange surveillance. Counselling can also help you plan a respectful conversation with relatives who may need their own advice.

Contact your clinician promptly for blood in the stool, persistent change in bowel habits, worsening abdominal pain, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss. These symptoms need assessment whether or not genetic testing has been completed. Seek support from the genetics team if a result creates anxiety or you are unsure how to arrange surveillance.

Ask what features in your family suggest FAP, which gene test is planned, and what each result would mean for you and relatives. Clarify the timing of colon examinations, possible upper digestive tract checks, warning symptoms, and who will coordinate gastroenterology, genetics, and surgical care.
