What to expect from frozen embryo transfer for ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can cause enlarged ovaries and fluid shifts after fertility medicines. Freezing embryos and delaying transfer gives the body time to settle before a pregnancy begins, because pregnancy hormones can worsen or prolong symptoms. In a later cycle, the clinic prepares the uterine lining either by following natural ovulation or by prescribing oestrogen followed by progesterone. The choice depends on ovulation, cycle regularity, previous response, and your medical history. Embryo survival after thawing and transfer plans will be discussed individually.

Attend the review that confirms your OHSS symptoms have improved and ask when your ovaries are expected to be ready. Take prescribed medicines on the stated schedule and report missed doses, new medicines, or a positive pregnancy test. The procedure usually involves placing a thin catheter through the cervix into the uterus while the embryo is released. Resting briefly afterward may be suggested, but ordinary activity instructions come from your clinic. Arrange the pregnancy test on the date provided rather than testing too early.

Seek urgent medical advice for worsening abdominal swelling or pain, repeated vomiting, shortness of breath, chest pain, faintness, very little urine, or sudden weight increase during or after OHSS. Contact the fertility clinic for heavy bleeding, fever, severe pelvic pain, or medication reactions after transfer.
