What to expect from fracture fixation surgery for a tibial plateau fracture

The surgeon realigns the joint surface and the main bone fragments, then holds them with plates, screws, or another suitable device. An assessment may include examination and imaging to understand the fracture pattern and swelling before surgery. The knee may be protected in a brace afterwards, and weight placed through the leg is often restricted while healing begins.

Early recovery usually focuses on swelling control, safe transfers, and gentle knee movement when the surgical team allows it. Physiotherapy then progresses strength, balance, walking aids, and gradually increased loading. The pace depends on the fracture, soft-tissue healing, fixation, and follow-up findings.

Arrange help with meals, bathing, transport, and stairs before the operation. Keep the operated leg elevated as advised, use crutches or a walker exactly as taught, and attend imaging and wound reviews. Do not add walking distance or exercises without checking the permitted level of loading. Take prescribed medicines as directed and keep the incision clean and dry according to the discharge instructions.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, drainage, fever, worsening wound pain, or a sudden change in swelling. Seek urgent care for new chest pain, difficulty breathing, faintness, or a painful swollen calf. New numbness, a cold or unusually pale foot, or inability to move the toes also needs immediate assessment.

Ask which movements and amount of weight are allowed, how to protect the incision, when driving or work may be considered, and what symptoms should trigger a same-day call. Clarify how follow-up scans will guide progression.
