What to Expect from Fractional Laser Treatment for Stretch Marks

Short answer
Expect an assessment of the stretch marks, numbing, fractional laser passes, and gradual texture changes through repeated healing cycles.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How laser may help stretch marks
Stretch marks are areas where the skin has stretched and its structure has changed. They may be newer and pink, red, or purple, or older and pale, silvery, or indented. Fractional laser creates microscopic treatment columns that can encourage remodelling around the marks and may make their texture or colour contrast less noticeable. It does not rebuild the skin to its original state.
The clinician considers the marks' age, colour, depth, location, skin tone, and whether the skin is currently changing because of pregnancy, weight change, growth, or medication. Treatment may be postponed if the area is tanned, inflamed, infected, or broken. Different body sites can need different settings and aftercare.
Preparing for the session and aftercare
Follow advice about sun exposure, shaving, retinoids, exfoliants, and other products before treatment. Numbing cream may be used; warmth, prickling, or brief discomfort can occur as the handpiece passes over the marks. Expect redness, swelling, tightness, and a rough texture afterward. Small crusts or peeling can appear while the skin repairs.
Wash gently, moisturise as instructed, and avoid scratching, picking, friction, and hot irritants until the area settles. Keep the treated skin covered from direct sunlight and use the recommended protection. The clinician will assess the response after healing; several sessions may be considered because each session addresses only part of the remodelling process.
When to contact the clinic
Seek advice if pain increases, swelling becomes pronounced, redness spreads, or the area develops blisters, pus, fever, an open sore, or a bad smell. Contact the clinic about persistent darkening or lightening, severe itching, or a reaction to aftercare products. Avoid self-treating colour changes with strong bleaching or exfoliating creams.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your marks are better suited to fractional laser or another approach, what change is realistic for their age and depth, and how many visits may be discussed. Ask about discomfort control, exercise and clothing during healing, sun protection, product restrictions, and the symptoms that need prompt review.

Questions people ask
Will fractional laser erase stretch marks?
It may soften their appearance, but stretch marks can remain visible because the underlying skin structure has changed.
Can all stretch marks be treated the same way?
No. Age, colour, depth, location, and skin tone affect the assessment and treatment settings.
