What to Expect from Fractional Laser Treatment for Burn Scars

A fractional laser treats small columns of scarred skin while leaving surrounding areas available to support healing. Depending on the laser and scar, treatment may aim to improve texture, tightness, colour contrast, or movement across a joint. It cannot erase a burn scar, and the response depends on scar maturity, thickness, pigmentation, location, and depth.

The treated area may feel hot, tight, or sunburned. Redness, swelling, pinpoint crusting, darker or lighter colour, and tenderness can occur. Several sessions may be discussed, with healing time between them so the clinician can judge the response and adjust settings.

Tell the clinician about active infection, cold sores, poor wound healing, medicines, recent tanning, and any tendency to form raised scars. Follow instructions about cleansing, ointment, dressings, and sun protection. Do not pick crusts or apply unapproved products while the skin barrier is recovering.

Keep follow-up appointments, especially when a scar crosses a joint or limits movement. Report changes in colour or texture rather than trying to correct them with harsh exfoliation. Protect healed skin from sunlight because treated skin can pigment unevenly.

Seek advice if pain, warmth, swelling, or redness is increasing, blisters spread, drainage develops, or the area has fever or worsening tenderness. Contact the clinician for significant colour change, delayed healing, or a scar that becomes more raised, itchy, or tight after treatment.

Ask which scar features the laser is expected to address, what device and settings may be used, how many visits might be considered, and what downtime is realistic for your skin type. Discuss pain control, pigment changes, wound care, and alternatives if the scar restricts movement.
