What to expect from fasciotomy for compartment syndrome

Compartment syndrome raises pressure inside a tight group of muscles, reducing blood flow and threatening nerves and muscle. During a fasciotomy, the surgeon makes an incision through the tight covering around the muscles so the tissues can expand. It may be performed under regional or general anaesthesia. The wound may need to remain open temporarily because swelling can persist, with a later procedure to close it or cover it. The hospital team checks circulation, sensation, movement, pain, and swelling.

Follow instructions about keeping the dressing dry, elevating the limb, weight-bearing, and moving nearby joints. Pain relief and blood-clot prevention may be prescribed. Do not remove packing or change a dressing unless instructed. Physiotherapy often begins with gentle movement and later addresses strength, walking, scar mobility, and return to function. Recovery depends on how long the tissues were under pressure and whether there was an injury alongside the syndrome.

Tell staff immediately about pain that suddenly worsens or feels out of proportion, a tight dressing, increasing numbness, new weakness, pale or cold fingers or toes, or difficulty moving them. After discharge, seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, fever, spreading redness, foul drainage, or a wound that opens.

Ask which compartments were released, whether the wound will need another operation, when weight-bearing is allowed, how the scar will be managed, and which changes require an emergency review.
