What to expect from an epidural steroid injection for sciatica

Sciatica describes symptoms along the sciatic nerve, often from irritation of a nerve root in the lower back. An epidural steroid injection delivers anti-inflammatory medicine into the epidural space near the suspected nerve. It may ease radiating leg pain and make walking or rehabilitation easier, but it does not correct every cause of sciatica.

The clinician reviews your pain pattern, strength, sensation, scan findings, medicines, allergies, infection history, and bleeding risk. The skin is numbed and imaging guides needle placement. Pressure, brief discomfort, or tingling may be noticed. You are monitored before going home.

Follow the clinic's instructions about medicines, wound care, bathing, and activity. Arrange transport when sedation is used. Gentle walking and changing position can help you avoid stiffness, while strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should wait until your clinician gives guidance. Temporary soreness or altered sensation can occur.

Note changes in leg pain, pins and needles, walking tolerance, sleep, and leg strength. Relief may not be immediate, and your follow-up plan may include physiotherapy, posture and movement work, or another treatment depending on the findings.

Call the treatment team for fever, spreading redness, drainage, severe persistent pain, or symptoms that are not settling. Get urgent help for new leg weakness, difficulty controlling urine or stool, numbness around the groin, severe headache, breathing trouble, fainting, or facial swelling.

Ask which nerve root is being targeted, what benefit is realistic, whether any medicine needs adjustment, when you can drive or exercise, and how the next decision will be made if leg pain remains.
