What to expect from emollient therapy for cradle cap

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can leave thick or greasy flakes on a baby’s scalp. An emollient helps loosen and soften the scale and reduces the dry, tight feeling around it. It does not remove every flake immediately and does not treat every possible cause of a scalp rash. Some loosened scale may come away during bathing, while other areas need repeated gentle care.

Use the product recommended for your baby and apply a small amount to the affected scalp as directed. Leave it for the advised time, then wash with a mild baby cleanser and use a soft brush only if the scale lifts easily. Never scratch, pick, or force a crust away. Arrange medical advice if the scalp is very red, swollen, wet, bleeding, painful, or developing yellow discharge. Seek advice if the rash spreads beyond the scalp, your baby seems unwell, or gentle care is not helping. A clinician can check whether infection or another skin condition needs different treatment.

Ask which emollient is suitable, how long it should stay on the scalp, and whether shampooing should follow each application. Ask what changes would suggest irritation, infection, or a different diagnosis.
