What to expect from electrosurgery for venous lake

A venous lake is a soft, blue or purple spot formed by widened small veins, commonly on a sun-exposed lip or ear. After cleaning and numbing the skin, the clinician uses a fine electrical instrument to treat the selected vessel. You may feel pressure, warmth, or brief stinging. The spot may darken, swell slightly, or form a crust afterward. The clinician will choose settings and protection based on the location, depth, and appearance of the lesion.

Keep the treated area clean and follow instructions about ointment or dressing. Avoid picking the crust, biting a treated lip area, or exposing the site to friction. Once the skin has closed, use broad sun protection to limit persistent colour change. Ask before applying lipstick, exfoliants, or other irritating products. A venous lake can return or another vascular spot can appear, so a changing lesion deserves reassessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Call the clinic if bleeding keeps restarting, pain intensifies, swelling continues to increase, or the site becomes increasingly warm, red, foul-smelling, or draining. Get urgent care for bleeding that will not stop with firm gentle pressure, rapidly expanding swelling, breathing difficulty, or an allergic reaction.

Ask whether the spot needs confirmation before treatment, what lip or ear aftercare is required, when normal eating or shaving can resume, and what changes should prompt a review.
