What to expect from electrosurgery for cherry angioma

A cherry angioma is a small collection of superficial blood vessels that may appear as a bright or dark red spot. After the area is cleaned and numbed when appropriate, the clinician applies an electrosurgical device to the lesion. The treated surface may look darker, crusted, or mildly swollen before it settles.

The aim is to improve the appearance or reduce repeated bleeding from a confirmed lesion. A clinician should assess an unusual, changing, or uncertain spot before treatment, because not every red or pigmented mark is a cherry angioma.

Keep the area clean and follow instructions about ointment or a dressing. Let any crust separate naturally; scratching or picking can delay healing and increase marking. Avoid friction, soaking, and unapproved products until the surface has closed, then protect the area from sun as advised.

Tell the clinician about medicines that affect bleeding or healing, a history of abnormal scarring, and any skin infection near the treatment site.

Contact your provider for bleeding that does not stop with firm direct pressure, increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, or worsening swelling. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, fever with a rapidly worsening wound, or facial swelling with breathing difficulty. Have a spot reviewed if it changes in colour, shape, size, or behaviour after treatment.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, whether a sample is needed, what wound care the site requires, how long crusting may last, and whether your skin tends to develop dark or raised marks after injury.
